We try to inform people that the standards for the pool they have may have changed. The pool may have been in compliance then, but by today’s standards, things have to be upgraded, such as the plumbing main drain and the covers have to be installed by people who are licensed to do that. When a person wants to have their pool remodeled, it’s more than just aesthetic. There are mechanical things that need to be addressed, which add to the cost, but unless it’s a pool with gold or copper plumbing, the corrections are relatively inexpensive. It’s sheer foolishness to spend money to have a pool resurfaced and looking good and have the underlying parts not safe or meeting the current requirements.
One thing to consider is the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. This important child safety law became effective in December 2008 and strives to:
- Enhance the safety of public and private pools and spas
- Encourage the use of layers of protection
- Reduce child drownings in pools and spas (nearly 300 each year involving children younger than five)
- Reduce the number of suction entrapment incidents, injuries and deaths
- Educate the public on the importance of constant supervision of children in and around water.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is the lead agency in implementing and enforcing the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. CPSC is working with other safety groups in the pool and spa safety community to encourage the use of layers of protection— such as fencing around pools, constant supervision, and requiring anti-entrapment drain covers and other safety devices.
